Big Top

In a traveling circus
where i was juggling fire
she walked a tightrope
without a net
out of nothing more than boredom
we combined her act and mine
which we thought was funny
but scared everybody else to death
and it was always our intention
to let go before we got burned
of course we never did
cause that's just not how we learn
and she said she always imagined
we might go out in that fashion
but i never cared
cause i didn't think that you'd get hurt
the clowns had acted out
our demise a thousand times
to the laughter of the middle-class
and their kids
but that night the silence was as loud
as any drunken, southern crowd
when we hit the ground
the way we did
and it was always our intention
to let go before we got burned
of course we never did
cause that's just not how we learn
and she said she always imagined
we might go out in that fashion
but i never cared
cause i didn't think that you'd get hurt
we landed in the bleachers
between the kids and all the teachers
we set the big top on fire
scarred a lot of folks
scared the animals off with the smoke
and you became the victim of my desire
and it was always our intention
to let go before we got burned
of course we never did
cause that's just not how we learn
and she said she always imagined
we might go out in that fashion
but i never cared
cause i didn't think that you'd get hurt

Careful
02:46
|
|||
Well I see right through you
you see right through me
we're careful not to look at ourselves for
fear of what we might see
And the words don't make me wiser
any more than your beauty it makes me want you
your beautiful mind says some things that I'm
afraid will come back to haunt you
careful, I might too
So if my passion dies
beside it I will lie
I'll wait like seed, for water
so you can bring me back to life
And the words don't make me wiser
any more than your beauty it makes me want you
your beautiful mind says some things that I'm
afraid will come back to haunt you
careful, I might too
Careful what you wish for, you be
careful opening up a strangers door
say what you want but you be sure
and be careful what you wish for
I see right through you
you see right through me
we're careful not to look at ourselves for
fear of what we might see
And the words don't make me wiser
any more than your beauty it makes me want you
your beautiful mind says some things that I'm
afraid will come back to haunt you
careful, I might too

Anyway
04:06
|

I found out how to tell when you are lying
you open up your mouth and then words come out
I'm not sure exactly what you're hiding
but greed had a hand in it I've no doubt
I figured out just how you keep control of me
you give me guilt for wanting it back
but I have grown stronger from the suffering
I thank you for the strength and I will
overcome you with that
but I love you anyway
anyway that it may come
I love you anyway
'cause that's what love it does
I found out how to tell when you are lying
you open up your mouth and then words come out
I'm not sure exactly what you're hiding
but greed had a hand in it I've no doubt
but I love you anyway
anyway that it may come
I love you anyway
'cause that's what love it does

Goodnight Carolina
04:10
|
|||
Certain of her comfort and desperate for change
headed for the Carolina hills
was met by a storm cloud of confusion and rain
surprised even me, it was a bitter pill
But she took me in, put me up for the night
she kept me dry
she was beautiful even in that haze
I went there uncertain and unsteady but now I know
we're destined to see a better day
So goodnight Carolina, goodnight
I will think of you when the clouds blot out the stars
Please forgive me for leaving before the morning light
goodnight Carolina, goodnight
I spent the next day trying to figure out
just what could have gone so wrong
maybe all the baggage that I brought
the things I didn't, the things that just do not belong
in a place like that where those lessons are taught
So goodnight Carolina, goodnight
I will think of you when the clouds blot out the stars
Please forgive me for leaving before the morning light
goodnight Carolina, goodnight
In the darkness I couldn't tell that
the clouds were receding
I drove away in fear of
fear of history repeating itself
I didn't know then but I know today
and it's too late, it's just too late
So goodnight Carolina, goodnight
I will think of you when the clouds blot out the stars
Please forgive me for leaving before the morning light
goodnight Carolina, goodnight

City Life

To answer your question the city life is good
I've seen so much more than I ever thought I would
I've seen men die right here on this street
I've seen busy folks step over them with their busy feet
I've seen kids go into business
to graves or to jail
Selling things you can't believe are for sale
I've seen buildings pop up like big iron weeds
In this concrete soil, that's covered in disease
...and one more thing
I've been wishing on satellites
tossing pennies in the sewer
crossing my fingers, my heart and my arms that
I wake up in yours
but that never comes true of course
And good ole Harvey, he's not as well
As he was when we talked before
Can't get a job and he swears there's no money
In killing folks anymore
He blames the government for cutting out
the middle-man
and driving down the wage
I mean the teenagers do it for free anymore
There's no money for a shooter these days
...it's a tough game to play
I've been wishing on satellites
tossing pennies in the sewer
crossing my fingers, my heart and my arms that
I wake up in yours
but that never comes true of course
If you're asking about me
I don't know what to tell you
I imagine a memory
The one I don't have of ...when I held you
So mostly I'm wishing on space stations
Tossing pennies and credit cards in the sewer
Crossing my fingers, my heart and my arms
that I wake up in yours
But that never comes true, of course.
